Claire Cote 63 Daily Nested Thoughts.jpg

Over the course of three years, I generated a growing library of daily thought drawings - one from every day. Each day I made a pen and ink drawing on the back of a small card. The drawings are not summaries of the day; instead each visually represents the moment in which I chose to make the drawing. It is a window into one particular thought, nested within many others. In this selective visual journal, I feel the absence of the many thoughts that pass fleetingly without representation. However, the thoughts that are caught by my pen become the footprints of my daily nested thoughts and a visual accumulation of the passage of time and space.

The project has manifested in different ways. Their first showing was as an a drawing exchange installation in which people were invited to leave me a thought drawing and take one of mine, which has been carefully transferred onto fabric. From the remains of this installation, I gathered the remaining sqaures of fabric bearing thought drawing transfers and carefully laid them out on my kitchen table and sewed them into a quilt - 63 daily thoughts assembled by stitches.

The library of three years of thoughts awaits its next manifestation.
