June 20 + 22: Renga Project in Santa Fe

June 5, 2014 Claire Cote

(Catherine Strisik)

I am honored to have been invited to contribute a drawing to the Renga Project, a collaborative poetry and drawing project culminating in an exhibition and book produced by the Axle Contemporary mobile gallery which opens in Santa Fe on Friday June 20th and a public reading at the NM Museum of Art on Sunday, June 22nd (also in Santa Fe). I hope that you can join us as one of these events!

The above image is a sneak preview of the drawing I submitted to the project along with the stanza from the poem that inspired the drawing.

Here is the organizer's description of the project:

The Renga Project began on the summer solstice, 2013. It's a new take on an ancient traditional  collaborative form of Japanese poetry. 52 weekly stanzas were written by a diverse group of New Mexico poets. We also invited 52 New Mexico artists to create a linked drawing with each artist responding to a writer's stanza. The poem has been displayed on a large sign in the Santa Fe Railyard all year, with new stanzas added weekly.

During the weekend of the 2014 summer solstice we will celebrate this year-long project.  On June 20, Axle Contemporary will open an exhibition of the drawings in our mobile gallery, and present the book with the entire collaborative poem and linked drawings.

On June 22 Axle Contemporary will present a group reading by the poets of the entire poem, a roundtable discussion, booksigning, and renga writing workshop at The New Mexico Museum of Art.

The New Mexico Museum of Art's curator of education, Ellen Zieselman will moderate the panel which includes Santa Fe Poet Laureate Jon Davis and Axle Contemporary project organizers and curators Matthew Chase-Daniel and Jerry Wellman.

Axle Contemporary will be parked at the Museum with the exhibition of Renga drawings.

What a treat to have such dear friends come visit and stop by my studio! We loved getting to see you. Thanks so much for sharing in and supporting my creative journey. So happy this little green jewel of a collage went home with you. Can't wait for o
Hints of fall are in the air, summer is winding down. Plants are thick with growth from the incredible rainfall we've received. A hike down to the Rio Grande is one of our favorite ways to celebrate any season.

My dad shared this piece of wisdom with me at a time when I really needed to hear it. Now it's in my kitchen reminding me to "Honor the rests."

Rest is directly linked to rejuvenation and resilience. My intention is to "honor the rest
Late summer in Sunshine Valley, view to the North down our driveway this morning. Cloud hat on Ute Mountain means more rain coming today. We are so grateful for these wonderful rains after such intense drought, but now many are experiencing flooding.
